Building a Solar Home in Kenya: A Seattle Worker's Guide

Seattle tech workers think about carbon footprints. Comes with the territory. Amazon, Microsoft, the whole culture treats sustainability as a design constraint, not optional. When that is your baseline, you do not want to throw it away building in another country.
Here is the thing nobody expects. Kenya is easier to build green than Seattle.
Seattle gets 152 sunny days a year. Nairobi gets 273, nearly double. A 5 kW solar system installed in Kenya costs KES 350,000 to 600,000 and runs a 3-bedroom house, lights, fridge, TV, laptops, phone charging. Add batteries for another KES 200,000 to 400,000 and you are off-grid completely. Try doing that for less than ten grand in Seattle.
The economics are getting better every year. Commercial grid power in Kenya costs KES 22 to 25 per kilowatt-hour. Solar through a power purchase agreement lands at KES 5 to 8 per kilowatt-hour over 25 years. Payback on a residential system is around 7 years. Kenya's energy regulator also introduced net metering in 2024. You can feed excess power back to the grid and offset your bill. The cap is 1 megawatt, more than enough for any home.
Keep Cool, Do Not Heat
Seattle problem: stay warm. Kenya problem: stay cool. Opposite strategies. Hollow concrete blocks or insulated panels for walls. High ceilings with clerestory windows so hot air rises and escapes. Roof insulation, which most Kenyan builders skip for some reason. Deciduous trees on the west side, they shade the wall in the afternoon and drop leaves in winter when you want the sun. All of this costs less than running AC for twenty years. Way less.
Kenya has natural materials Seattle builders can only dream of. Locally quarried stone. Certified plantation timber. Interlocking stabilised soil blocks. Eco-friendly blocks use less cement, produce less waste, do not need plastering, same price as standard blocks, about 30 percent less embodied carbon. No brainer.
The government is catching up too. Kenya's Climate Change (Green and Resilient Buildings) Regulations 2023 now require all new buildings to meet energy efficiency, water conservation, and green space standards. A Green Financing Accelerator launched in February 2026 is helping developers access affordable loans for sustainable construction. Banks like HFC, I&M, and Absa are starting to offer green construction loans with better terms. If you are building green, the financing landscape is shifting in your favour.
Seattle gets 37 inches of rain yearly and parts of Nairobi are similar. But the infrastructure in Kenya is less reliable. Municipal water cuts out, tankers are expensive. A 200-square-metre roof in Nairobi catches about 180,000 litres a year. Stick a 10,000-litre tank on it with proper filtration and it covers most household needs. No bills. No waiting for delivery.
The most sustainable building is the one that does not need replacing. Correct concrete mix. Proper reinforcement. Quality finishes.
